This stunning silver over black 356 Speedster is a culmination of the
best of the replica aftermarket. While most replicas are based on a VW
chassis, this car is built on a custom tube frame chassis by Metal Craft
of Indiana. This strong chassis allows the use of a more sophisticated
suspension and braking system. Classic Motor Carriage of Florida
manufactured the beautiful fiberglass body. Power is by an air-cooled 4
cylinder dual port VW engine, enlarged to 1835cc with dual Weber 44IDF
carburetion with auxiliary venturi and linkage update modifications.
Performance camshaft, pistons, liners, rockers, deep oil sump with
external oil cooler and thermostat are included. Ignition is
computerized Jacobs with Magnecor wires and a Bosch distributor with a
Hall effect magnetic sensor.
Heat exchangers and a large tube exhaust system have been installed with
Borla stainless exhaust tips. The heater system is functional and
inline booster fans have been installed. The fresh transaxle is a
four-speed manual with shift kit. Redline synthetic oil is in both
engine and transaxle. The interior has been carpeted in wool including
wool map pockets on the kick panels. Floor mats are coco mats. We have
sealed both the front floorboards and steering column so moisture and
wind leaks are not a factor as they are on most replicas. The door
panels have been pleated to match the Corbeau seats; boots have been
made for the shifter and heater control. There is a center armrest glove
box. A Halon 1211 fire extinguisher is mounted on the tunnel.
A Blaupunkt AM-FM-CD player is mounted along with Blaupunkt speakers in
the doors. The radio antenna is hidden. The doors have been fitted with
Dynamat for that solid German sound. The dash is fitted with German
instruments, the speedometer on the left, the tachometer center and the
fuel and oil temp compose the three large gauges, the three smaller
gauges are oil pressure, voltage and oil temp. To the right of the
instruments are proper badges and the grab handle. A Beltronics remote
radar and laser detector is installed with the sensors concealed in the
A cigarette lighter is installed and a 12V accessory jack for a phone is
hidden from view under the dash. The steering wheel is Italian
Fittipaldi in black leather with a custom Porsche cloisonné horn button.
A full cloth tonneau cover with center zipper is installed. A full
cloth soft top, highboy style, includes side curtains and curtain
storage pocket. The windscreen has been painstakingly fitted to the
polished aluminum frame. The wiper motor armature has been rewound
giving modern day wiper speeds. The front trunk has been finish trimmed
in black loop carpet including the bottom side of the lid. A new larger
capacity fuel tank has been fitted for extended range. The tank has been
sealed internally and a modern non-leaded filler neck has been fitted
so that filling the tank is easy and clean. One can fill this tank
without soiling your clothing. A tank vent system has been fitted
including a K&N breather filter. The headlamps are Hella E-code with
+30 Xenon bulbs. Hella air horns and electric compressor are installed.
The headlamp and air horn relays reside in the trunk along with the
Optima red top battery. A custom carpet has been made for the gas tank
as well. The front trunk also houses the brake fluid reservoir. A
Porsche travel tool kit is included along with a wood handled California
duster. Both trunk and engine lid hinges have been fabricated from
reinforced steel and are quite sturdy unlike most replicas.
The front suspension is dual A arm style with coil over shocks. Anti
sway bars are mounted front and rear. Adjustable joints allow for a
proper alignment. This Speedster also has four-wheel disc brakes. A
hydraulic line lock for the rear brakes has been installed to allow a
parking brake system. The 15x4" rims have been specially sectioned and
modified to 15x5" allowing the fitment of quality modern 185x65x15 HR
Yokohama radial tires.
This car attracts tremendous attention wherever it goes. It truly
crosses generations of enthusiasm. It is always thumbs up and waves.
There is no comparison in performance and quality to the various
commercial Speedster replicas available. There will be no empty feeling
with this car as many have had on purchasing a conventional replica and
then they add thousands more to bring the car up to the standards they
had hoped for. It has a good throaty sound under acceleration and
handles quite well. The overall power, handling, braking and finish are
far above what an original Speedster enjoyed. All the while enjoying a
car that can be easily repaired without the worry and insurance extremes
of the real thing. Over $45,000 has been invested in this Speedster.
No swing arm rear suspension or front H frame suspension here. The
strong tube frame gives this Speedster excellent rigidity and allows for
the use of modern suspension and brake components. One can jack this
car up by the frame, between the front and rear wheels and still open
and shut the doors. There is no flex in the body; this gives the car a
much longer lifespan without rattles andcomponents working loose.
The door lines on this tube frame 356 Speedster do not change when
raised with floor jack. On VW based replicas the body flexes so much the
door will not open or at best scrapes.
